Baby Peter doctor 'missed unique opportunity'!

Dr Jerome Ikwueke had to appear before the General Medical Council. He is a doctor who had received training at the local NHS in family doctors aware of child protection issues. He is being accused of professional misconduct. He had neglected a baby called Peter Connelly. Peter died on 3 August 2007 with more than 50 injuries. Dr Ikwueke had seen Peter more than half a dozen times before his death. Dr Ikwueke had seen some of the injuries, but had not done nothing. The baby had broken ribs, visible bruising and injuries to his hand and grab marks as well. He was aware of Peter’s mother, Tracey Connelly, history of depression, and that she was struggling to cope with being a mother. The hearing of Dr Ikwueke was adjourned until Tuesday.

It is hard to believe that Dr Ikwueke had not reported the injuries that Peter had. The baby had been in the hospital before he died, so the injuries where visible, like the grab marks and the bruises. He cannot be afraid to report such things because it is his responsibility to report it. The baby had suffered before he died in the hospital with 50 injuries, 50. How could he have been pretending that there was nothing wrong with Peter. And now the child died because his mother didn’t want him and because Dr Iklwueke was afraid to report the injuries. It is sad to hear that is still happening.

  1. It is very sad that a doctor who is aware of child protection issues does something like this. I really do not understand why he did not report this. He should have saved Peter, not neglecting him. It is good that he has to appear before the General Medical Council and I hope he will be punished for this.

  2. The doctor had a duty to report the injuries that Peter had. If he had 50 injuries that he must have been in visible pain so there would have been no way he this doctor didn't know about the injuries. He should have reported it and I hope he gets punished for not reporting it.
